This is an ancient Koranic manuscript page from Chapter 2, Surah Al-Baqarah (the Cow), verses 118-122, 'True Guidance. "God's guidance is the only true guidance. Those we have given the Book (The Qur'an) should follow it as it should be followed.......as for those who reject it, it is they who are the losers". Al-Baqarah is one of the longest Chapters of the Quran, with emphasis on the quality of the believers, disbelievers and hypocrites and God's power to create and resurrect. It is from the remains of a Koran produced at the time of the Crusades, under the the Great Seljuks of Iran. It is written on the thick linen paper typical of a time when vellum was being replaced. The scripture of fourteen (14) lines of ‘naskh’ in black ink, with simple 'aya' also in black ink with red circumference. There are signs of damp, particularly the bleed through of 'aya' from the attached page which show as washed out green roundels. There has been a repair made and shown on the reverse of the page (image 4d), but the front aside from some creasing to the right margins is pretty clean. The"Seljuk Age" which spanned three hundred years, from the 11th century through the 13th century, was an age of great cultural and political change, restoring Muslim orthodoxy to the central Islamic lands and vanquishing the Caliphate in Baghdad. By the early 12th century, the Seljuks were masters of most of Afghanistan, Persia and the Middle East as far west as Egypt. The Seljuks adopted Persian culture along with the Islamic faith on their way westward, although they chose the Sunni Hanefite sect instead of the Persian Shiite sect. Their culture was an amalgam of many languages and traditions. While Arabic retained its supremacy in the spheres of law, theology and science, the Persian language and customs dominated the culture of the court.
