Lieutenant Colonel Hardin Burnley-Campbell (1843-1920) was a soldier, hunter and adventurer of a restless (and vain) disposition. He valiantly fought in the Afghan wars, marching from Cabool to Kandahar and the Boer Wars. A part of his archive on his involvement in Afghanistan brought, nearly 5000 GBP, at auction on 24 June 2021. After his retirement, he incessantly hunted and travelled the world. In 1907 he became a real-life Phileas Fogg circumnavigating the globe in 40 days, 19 hours and 30 minutes. In the newspapers of his day, he was hailed for his record-breaking travel.
This archive is of a domestic nature it comprises of. 1) The book above 2) An account book of 123 pages. The Gamekeepers Game Preservers 3. A moving letter, dated 1914, in which he, at the age of 72, summarizes his career and offers to fight in the trenches. 3) A long hand written letter dated 1888 4) Official commission of peace in favor of Colonel Burnley Campbell, 5) Bundle of 54 letters from around 1896 to Burnley Campbell from various people, with a red ribbon. 6) A tiny note book, about hunting and race hounds, approx., 40 leaves, dated 1875. 7) Leaflets, of the Cowal Foxhunting association 8) 3 more bundles of letters 1910-1915, 8) A photograph, 9. Approx. 20 other long letters 10. His personal walking stick, with a silver plaquettes saying that he walked 57 miles, from Ormidale to Inverchaolin road,via Dunoon and return, departure, 3. AM, Return 9.30 pm.
