Byōbu kamerscherm - Papier, Lak, Hout, Bladgoud - Kanô School style - Japan - Vroege/Midden-Edo-periode (17e/18e eeuw)

An exceptional, tall six-panel Edo-period byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) showcases a sophisticated garden landscape painting in the distinguished style of the Kanô School, set on a backdrop of gold leaf. Spanning a wide river that gently winds through an exceptionally maintained garden, a stone slab bridge connects the scene. Curved palm trees rise behind rock formations, flanked by meticulously groomed dense bushes shaped into ovals. On the opposite bank stands an enchanting large cherry blossom 桜 (sakura) tree, adorned with delicate pink-white flowers, alongside gracefully curving pine trees 松 (matsu), amidst a variety of pink and white flowers. A flock of sparrows 雀 (suzume) glides through the sky, while a pair of tits, referred to as ‘yamagara’ 山雀, find solace on a rock beneath the flowering branches. The scene is surrounded by dense gold leaf. Colour and ink on paper and gold leaf. The screen is bordered by two silk trims – a slender white-golden brocade one and a broader greyish blue one - and is encased in a black lacquered wooden frame with protective hardware with engraved checked design. Period: Japan – Early-/Mid-Edo period (17th/18th century). Considering its age, around 220-420 years old, it is in a very good condition with traces of wear conform age, and old restorations. Some repapering of the back. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. The protective frame was expertly and expensively refurbished at a later date in Japan, around the Taishô period (1912-1926). A highly skilled craftsmanship that requires a lot of expertise and knowledge. Dimensions: Total width: 381.8 cm (2 x 64.9 cm, 4 x 63 cm); Height: 170.8 cm. This room divider can be mounted flat on a wall and presented as one piece of art. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
