This statue, named "Tower of the Sun," is a creation by Taro Okamoto, a revered figure in Japanese modern art known for his avant-garde style and profound philosophical undertones. Crafted for the 1970 Osaka Expo, it stands as a powerful emblem of post-war Japanese culture, embodying themes of renewal and optimism.
In the 1970s, the salary of a new graduate was about 30,000 yen and a TV set was very expensive at about 200,000 yen. Not everyone could afford to buy one, but this Tower of the Sun was given out as a novelty when one bought a Mitsubishi color TV.
