The artwork features the maki-e technique, showcasing gold and silver dust on a polished black lacquer surface, portraying women in traditional attire from the celebrated narrative.
The depicted kimono patterns include the tortoiseshell design, which consists of hexagons interspersed with floral patterns symbolizing longevity and good fortune, and the chrysanthemum, revered for its association with rejuvenation and nobility.
"The Tale of Genji" is a pinnacle of Japanese literature, penned in the 11th century by Murasaki Shikibu. It intricately details the life and loves of Genji, a prominent Heian era aristocrat, thus painting a rich picture of courtly life in ancient Japan.
The condition is very good, but there are some minor scuffs.
