In this print, Tatsugawa is wearing a long, official garment which exceeds the length of his legs, the trousers turned up to reveal the yellow lining. He has a high hat (tateeboshi) and is holding the fan of a commander in his right hand. His stance suggests the warrior to be resolute and authoritative. The vassals' zeal is expressed in their countenance and postures.
Kuniyoshi's series 'Heroes of the Grand Pacification' consists of fifty vertical oban format prints. Each print is signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga (drawn by Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi). The artist's paulownia leaf and flower seal is printed in red under his signature. The subject is named in large characters in the upper right hand corner of each print. A biographical note fills the upper portion of each print.
