Miyanaga Tozan I (1868-1941) is one of the most important artist in Kyoto ceramic world. He was born in Ishikawa prefecture, and graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of Art) where he studied Chinese celadon and blue-white ceramics. He represented Japan at Arts Expositions, and studied art in Europe before returning to Japan in 1902 to devote himself to the production of ceramics, with great emphasis on celadon. Among his students were Kitaoji Rosanjin and Arakawa Toyozo, but he was teacher or mentor to many prominent artists. He was succeeded by his adopted daughter whose porcelain has refreshing variation of color and delicate touch. The kiln is now run by his grandson Miyanaga Tozan III.
