Author's Note
Kawamata Mizuki, whose real name was Shotaro Takamizawa, was an influential cartoonist in Japan's Showa era. His representative work, *Second Lieutenant Wild Rose*, was created during this period. With a humorous and witty style, it depicts interesting stories of military life and shapes a large number of vivid characters. Since its release, it has received widespread attention and become an important milestone in his creative career.  

In the early stage of his creative career, Kawamata Mizuki made forward-looking explorations in art. In 1922, he joined the avant-garde art group "MAVO" to absorb diverse artistic nutrients. In 1926, his rakugo (traditional Japanese comic storytelling) works were adopted by Kodansha, under the pen name "Rokutei Takazawa". In 1928, using "Kawamata Mizuki" as his comic pen name, he launched his first serialized comic *Mebata no Chibi-chan* (目玉のチビちゃん) in *Shōnen Club* (少年俱乐部), officially starting his career in serialized comics. In 1931, *Private Kuro of the Stray Dogs* (野犬小黑二等兵) was published in the New Year issue of *Shōnen Club*; it ran for 11 years due to its high popularity. In 1933, another work *B凹凸 Kurobei* (凸凹黒兵衛) was serialized in the supplementary issue of *Fujin Club* (婦人倶楽部), further expanding his audience. In 1934, he took Machiko Hasegawa as his apprentice to cultivate reserve forces for the comic industry; however, in the same year, due to the paper conservation policy, he received a writing ban from the Cabinet Information Bureau on comics such as *Private Kuro of the Stray Dogs*, temporarily halting his creation.  

After the war, Kawamata Mizuki regained his creative enthusiasm and continued to produce high-quality works. In 1958, *Private Kuro of the Stray Dogs: Biography* (野犬小黑白传) began serialization in the October issue of *Maru* (丸) magazine. In 1967, *The Complete Comics of Private Kuro of the Stray Dogs* (野犬小黑漫画全集) was published by Kodansha, systematically organizing and presenting his classic works. In 1981, *The Structure of Humor* (滑稽的构造) was published, demonstrating his active creativity even in his later years. In 1987, Kawamata Mizuki was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, 4th Class, Gold Rays with Rosette; his artistic achievements were highly recognized by the official sector, becoming an important honor in the Japanese comic industry.
