a professional, high-fidelity reel-to-reel recorder famously produced in the United Kingdom in the 60s

Clarke & Smith were one of the few companies to use the Wright and Weaire tape deck mechanism, Vortexion and more famously, Ferrograph are the only others that spring to mind.
C & S recorders were mainly produced for sale to education authorities, universities etc. Record and playback amplifiers were transistorised, and they had facilities to connect to 70-100V lines for use through public address systems.
The TR-634’s wooden cabinet was very substantial, bringing the overall weight of the machine to nearly 50 lbs (22 kg) and an extra long carry-handle was fitted to enable two people to carry it.
