Raymond Depardon
CHANEL/2017/Japanese/235*230*20

“Depardon / Tokyo 1964-2016,” a photo book by French photographer Raymond Depardon. Born into a farming family, he began his career as a photojournalist in Paris, continuing to document the realities of conflict and poverty, primarily in Africa and the Middle East, and won the Robert Capa Award in 1973. Depardon is also a master filmmaker who has produced more than 20 documentaries and received the Louis Delluc Prize, France’s highest film honor. This book was published to coincide with a photography exhibition held at the Chanel Nexus Hall in Tokyo in 2017. Depardon first visited Japan in 1964 to cover the Tokyo Olympics. He continued to visit Tokyo to take photographs, and in 2016, he captured images in color of Tokyo after it was selected to host the 2020 Olympics. This book features photographs organized into three sections: 1964, 1985–2008, and 2016. It captures the excitement of the Olympics and the ever-changing streets of Tokyo.
