'Quiete' is a unique wall sculpture made from original Rubik’s Cubes, mounted on an MDF panel.
The work depicts a calm face emerging from a dense and irregular field of colour. The expression remains quiet and composed, while the surrounding composition appears more fragmented and unstable.
The title, which translates as “stillness” or “quiet”, refers to the possibility of finding a sense of calm within visual and emotional disorder.
From distance, the individual cubes merge into a recognisable portrait.
Seen up close and from the side, the image returns to a physical grid of coloured, three-dimensional modules.
Giovanni Contardi (b. 1994) is an Italian artist internationally recognised for his mosaics created entirely from original Rubik’s Cubes. His installations are permanently exhibited at the Rossini National Museum in Italy and at Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel at Disneyland Paris.
His work was also mentioned by Ernő Rubik, inventor of the Rubik’s Cube, in his autobiographical book Cubed: The Puzzle of Us All (2020).
