Greece - "The Phoenix Series" (1967-1973) - Set of 11 Drachma Coins - Military Junta Period
A comprehensive thematic collection of 11 Greek Drachma coins minted during a pivotal and controversial era of modern Greek history: the Military Junta (1967-1974).
The unifying element of this collection is the Phoenix rising from the flames, the official emblem of the 21st of April regime. This symbol is prominently featured on every coin in the set, representing the regime's propaganda of national "rebirth."
The collection includes two distinct historical phases.
-The Transition Period (1967-1971): Coins featuring the portrait of King Constantine II on the obverse, but already incorporating the Phoenix emblem on the reverse. Includes the 50 Lepta, 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 Drachmae denominations.
-The Republic Era (1973): Coins minted after the formal abolition of the Monarchy. These replace the royal portrait with diverse mythological themes such as Pegasus (10 Drachmae), the Goddess Athena (20 Drachmae), and the Trident of Poseidon, while keeping the large Phoenix as the central reverse motif.
Denominations: From 10 Lepta up to 20 Drachmae.
