Sony ICF-SW7600GR – Flagship for Sonys kompakte 7600-serie

The ICF-SW7600GR is the most advanced version of Sony’s portable 7600 family. Its superiority over earlier models lies not only in the number of functions it offers, but especially in the way it handles difficult AM and shortwave signals.

Its key technical feature is the synchronous detector with separate USB or LSB sideband selection. When receiving a station affected by fading or interference from an adjacent transmitter, the user can select the cleaner sideband. This reduces distortion and interference in a way that is not possible with Sony models lacking synchronous detection.

The receiver offers:

* a dual-conversion AM receiver with PLL synthesised tuning;
* continuous coverage from 150 to 29,999 kHz, plus FM;
* selectable USB/LSB synchronous detection;
* genuine SSB and CW reception, with BFO and fine tuning over a range of approximately ±1.5 kHz;
* 100 station memories arranged across 10 pages;
* automatic scanning of stored frequencies;
* a separate input for an external AM antenna;
* an adjustable RF attenuator, useful when an external antenna causes signal overload;
* a fixed-level LINE OUT connection suitable for recording broadcasts;
* two standby timers, together with local-time and world-time displays.

Compared with the ICF-7600D, ICF-7600DS and ICF-SW7600, the GR’s major advantage is its synchronous detector and its much more capable memory-management system.

Compared with the ICF-SW7600G, which already featured synchronous detection and SSB reception, the GR increases memory capacity from 20 to 100 stations. It also introduces a more practical page-based organisation system and memory scanning. For these reasons, the ICF-SW7600GR represents the final and most complete development of the 7600 series.

Compared with the Sony ICF-SW55, its decisive advantage is selectable synchronous detection. The SW55 has an elaborate station-management system, but it cannot reduce fading distortion and adjacent-channel interference in the same way.

Sony Models That Surpass It

The Sony ICF-2001D, marketed in North America as the ICF-2010, is the only Sony portable receiver that clearly surpasses the ICF-SW7600GR in overall radio performance. It offers greater sensitivity to very weak signals, superior filters and selectivity, a more robust synchronous detector, fuller audio and reception of the aeronautical band. It is, however, considerably larger and heavier.

The Sony ICF-SW77 can surpass the GR in raw sensitivity, selectivity, tuning ergonomics and station management. It is a larger and more complex receiver from a higher product class, although its superiority is not absolute: the GR’s synchronous detector remains highly effective, while the GR itself is considerably more compact and better suited to travel.

If Sony’s larger receivers are also included, the CRF-1 and CRF-320/CRF-330K series surpass the ICF-SW7600GR in RF design, filtering, tuning and audio quality. However, these are tabletop receivers and do not belong to the same compact portable category.

The model’s exact position within Sony’s range can therefore be summarised as follows:

ICF-SW7600GR is the most advanced and complete receiver in Sony’s compact 7600 series. Among Sony portable receivers, it is clearly surpassed by the ICF-2001D/ICF-2010 and, in certain areas, by the ICF-SW77.
The radio is in good cosmetic condition and performs all tested functions correctly. Reception and audio output are stable, with no interruptions, observable faults or operational symptoms associated with degraded capacitors. All buttons respond correctly, the LCD operates and clearly displays the selected frequencies, the casing is complete and free of cracks, and the telescopic antenna is straight, complete and fully functional. The radio is being sold solely as part of a collection reorganisation, as I continue to own a Sony ICF‑SW7600G. It is offered exactly as shown in the photographs.

I recommend operating the radio with four good-quality AA rechargeable batteries. Its power consumption is low, while battery operation is practical and avoids the radio-frequency interference that some AC adapters, particularly switching power supplies, may introduce into reception. For this reason, I do not consider an investment in a separate AC adapter necessary. To protect the radio, I have always removed the batteries during periods of non-use, preventing any risk of deterioration or leakage into the battery compartment and power-supply circuitry.
