A beautiful 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting the "Tikhvin Mother of God" (Tikhvinskaya), masterfully executed on a luminous gold leaf background.Composition and Iconography:

The icon represents one of the most celebrated and highly venerated Marian images in the Russian Orthodox tradition. Belonging to the Hodegetria iconographic type, it portrays the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child on her left arm while her head inclines tenderly towards Him. The young Christ raises His right hand in a holy blessing and holds a rolled scroll in his left hand, with one of his soles characteristically turned toward the viewer. The traditional Church Slavonic inscription on the left clearly reads "Tikhvinskaya Presvyataya Bogoroditsa".

The icon is executed in tempera on a solid wooden panel with a traditional gesso ground. The entire background, as well as the haloes, are executed in a rich, vibrant gold leaf, which beautifully illuminates the fine linear work and dark, expressive facial tones typical of 19th-century traditional religious workshops.

The icon is in good antique condition. The painted surface displays an authentic age patina with fine craquelure across the gesso layer. The gold leaf background is well-preserved with minor historical rubbings and honest age wear along the outer borders, all of which confirm the historical integrity and devotional character of the piece. The wooden panel remains stable and sound.
