You're bidding on two books by James Welling.

James Welling is an American photographer known for his color-filtered and digitally manipulated photographs. Throughout his practice, Welling often focuses on locations that were personally or historically meaningful, particularly landscapes and architecture such as Phillip Johnson’s seminal Glass House. He explores both ambiguity and skepticism while maintaining a deeply formal process that connects the legacy of Conceptual Art to the technical practice of photography. Born in 1951 in Hartford, CT, Welling went on to study at the California Institute of the Arts under notable professors such as John Baldessari. Welling is in the permanent collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, among others. Welling resides in New York City.

James Welling – Light Sources
Publisher: SteidlMACK, 2011
Hardcover, 128 pages, English
Size: 26x19cm
New in seal

Like much of Welling’s work, Light Sources taps into memories and emotions in the viewer, about darkness, strange places, and the wonder of that which attracts us for reasons unknown. It is a trope for the seductions of the quickly glimpsed, the half remembered, the partially understood, qualities that Welling wants to hold up, examine, and admire without piercing the fragile surface of their own fugitive grace. Carol Squiers, Artforum, 1998

James Welling – Monograph
Publisher: Aperture, 2013
Hardcover, 255 pages, English
Size: 28x24cm
New in seal

“James Welling: Monograph” provides the most thorough presentation of the artist’s work to date. Since the mid-1970s, Welling’s work has explored realism and transparency, abstraction and representation, optics and description, personal and cultural memory, and the material and chemical nature of photography. To date, the artist has been the subject of numerous catalogues addressing his more than 25 bodies of work. Yet no previous book has attempted to link these works and examine the primary threads that run through them all.
