Portrait of King Denis – Original Contemporary Surrealist Masterpiece

Up for auction is this original artwork, titled "Portrait of King Denis" (Retrato de D. Dinis), straight from my studio!

First things first: I am clearly a much better painter than I am a photographer. I gave it my absolute all, tried every angle, and fought with the lighting—so please forgive any glare! Trust me, it looks much better in real life than my photography skills suggest.

About the Artwork

Rich in poetic and symbolic narrative, "Portrait of King Denis" reinterprets the historical figure of Portugal’s famous Troubadour King through a bold surrealist and expressionist lens.
The central, highly stylized figure commands the canvas with fluid forms and defined contours. Adorned with a golden crown and deconstructed facial features, he holds both a stringed instrument—evoking his legacy as a poet and musician—and a royal sword. The king's striking red and dark cloak creates a majestic contrast against the deep, textured background of emerald and jade green.
Influenced by modernist Surrealism and figurative Expressionism, the composition balances vibrant warm tones with deep cool hues, relying on expressive light, shadow, and formal deconstruction to create an immersive, theatrical, and timeless visual experience.
