Ming Dynasty Pottery Male Servant Figure Circa 14th-17th century AD An interesting mould-made terracotta attendant figure standing on a raised, square-shaped base. The gentleman wears a long, green-glazed robe with contrasting accents on sides, black boots, and a red high hat. His face displays a serene expression with deep-set eyes, a small nose, and smiling lips. Mingqi, "spirit objects" are small terracotta statues usually depicting court ladies, servants, dancers, and musicians - both men and women, but also horses, other domestic animals, mystical beasts and miniature architectural models of houses, farms, granaries. These items were buried together with deceased people in graves to serve them in the afterlife. Cf. The British Museum, Museum number 1938,0524.29.
