Chôzu'bachi 手水鉢 (vannbasseng) - Granitt - Japan - Andre halvdel av Edo-perioden (1700-tallet/Første halvdel av 1800-tallet)

Exceptionally rare and remarkable antique Japanese chôzu’bachi 手水鉢 (water basin) is expertly crafted from a single piece of granite into a globular shape that mimics a chrysanthemum flower 菊 (kiku), featuring bulbous and plump petals. The granite showcases a striking array of grey and white hues, creating a naturally mottled effect. It is further distinguished by a richly aged patina and gently softened lines, highlighted by remnants of moss. Chôzu'bachi, also known as a water reservoir for the hands, is an ornamental feature frequently encountered in traditional Japanese gardens. Its purpose extends beyond mere decoration, as it serves as a vessel for ritual hand washing and mouth cleansing, and is in such environments called a tsukubai 蹲. Prior to engaging in the tea ceremony or stepping onto sacred grounds like Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, individuals partake in this purifying act. Chôzu'bachi embodies a profound cultural significance, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness and spiritual preparation in Japanese traditions. Period: Japan – Second half Edo period (18th century/First half 19th century). Approx. dimensions: Height 27 cm, Diameter 52 cm. The inner basin has a diameter of approx. 28 cm and is 14 cm deep. Weight 88 kg. In a very good original condition. Please have a look at the photos for a clear condition reference. We will use a wooden pallet and good packing for safe transport. When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity.
