GIOCO DEL GIOCOLIERE | Marino Marini

REF. Guastalla A95

This work is an etching by Marino Marini (1901-1980), a representative 20th-century Italian sculptor. The horse depicted is the most important subject he continued to draw throughout his life. This specific work was planned and presented at the Japan Contemporary Sculpture Center (closed in 2002) and is listed in the leaflet.

Artist Profile:
Marino Marini (1901–1980) was born in Pistoia, Tuscany. In 1917, he entered the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence to study painting and drawing, beginning sculpture around 1922. He taught at the art school in Monza near Milan from 1929 and at the Brera Academy from 1940. From 1928, he participated in several exhibitions of the "Novecento" group. In 1935, he received the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the 2nd Rome Quadrenniale. In 1952, he was awarded the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the 26th Venice Biennale, gaining international acclaim. He produced bronze statues themed on female figures, horses, and riders, influenced by ancient Greek and Etruscan art. After injuring his wrist during stone carving in the late 1960s, he focused on painting and printmaking from 1974 onwards.
