Betelbox - Indonezja (Bez ceny minimalnej )
Traditional Sirih (betel)box made of brass with lid, with openwork leaf and curlicue motifs.
This betel box is also in the collection of the Tropical (Tropen)Museum in Amsterdam.
Dated: 1910-1920; Indonesia.
Provenance: private collection.
Betel containers or Sirihboxes were considered paraphernalia.
During the engagement and marriage ceremony, the Sirih-Pinang tradition was practiced regardless of religion or ethnicity. Because Sirih and Pinang belong together, it is a symbol of connection and inseparability. This custom represents the inseparable bond between husband and wife during the wedding ceremony.
A Sirihbox (betel container) is used in the Sirih-Pinang ceremony. By accepting a Sirihbox, parents agree that their daughter will become the donor's bride.
The Sirihbox contains small compartments for the ingredients of the betel bite, a tray or bowl for the Sirih leaves. The small containers for lime, betel nut, gambir or other ingredients are stored together in this Sirihbox.
No scratches, cracks or dents. In a great vintage condition.
