Mainline History: The Class 27 locomotive is a type of electric locomotive that has been used since 1981 by the SNCB, for both passenger and freight trains. These locomotives are technically near identical to the later Class 11, 12 and 21. The largest difference is that these last 3 series only have 2/3 of the engine power of the Class 27. Sixty of these locomotives were built during the 1980s, namely 2701 to 2760. To date, all of them are still in use. Locomotive 2711 pulled a train of 70 carriages in 1991, and by doing this, broke the old record of a Dutch 1607 locomotive, which pulled 60 carriages in 1989.
