Omega - Speedmaster Moonwatch - ST 145.022 - Homem - 1980-1989

YOU SHOULD KNOW : While the Speedmaster was originally introduced in 1957 as a racing watch, it wasn't until 1969 when the hand-wound chronograph accompanied the crew of Apollo 11 onto the surface of the Moon that it received the legendary status that it holds today. Two known Speedmaster references were worn by the crew of Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore a 105.012, while Michael Collins wore the later 145.012 – basically the same reference that we see here. One of the most iconic and important watches of all time, the OMEGA Speedmaster ref. 145.022 needs little introduction. First launched in 1968, one year prior to NASA's first trip to the Moon, the 145.022 reference series spans approximately thirteen years, along the way including six sub-references and their accompanying variations in their case back numbers and dials. These six included the 145.022-68, 145.022-69, 145.022-71, 145.022-74, 145.022-76, and 145.022-78, the -XX referring to the production year of the case back and helpfully indicating which year-appropriate features should (or should not) be present for other aspects of the watch, most notably the dial. The 145.022 reference series was in production until approximately 1981, when the similarly named, but nonetheless next generation ref. 145.0022 replaced it as OMEGA's chronograph flagship. Although through its production years the 145.022 included variations in most notably dial type – with some models opting for "flat" dial types and others using "stepped" design – the overall iconic style is defined by a few details set in place by the vintage models that accompanied the Apollo 11 mission. Of these details, what's essential is the presence of a large stainless steel case sized at 42mm, topped by a black aluminum bezel with a printed tachymeter scale, and the right side flanked by wide pump pushers and a pair of crown guards. The case is then secured to the wrist by ways of twisted "lyre" lugs connecting to a matching stainless steel bracelet. The dial features a black background, the dark canvas featuring white accents throughout that maximize legibility even under the most strenuous conditions. An applied OMEGA logo alongside a printed "Professional" text top the configuration, while a pair of baton hour and minute hands match a signature speedy-style pointer used to count the chronograph seconds. A manually wound movement powers these hands, while a closed, Seahorse-engraved caseback protects the mechanism, whether on this world or another.
