★★★ Van Morrison “Sir George Ivan Morrison OBE (born 31 August 1945), known professionally as Van Morrison, is a Northern Irish singer, musician and songwriter whose recording career has spanned seven decades. Morrison began performing as a teenager in the late 1950s, playing various instruments including guitar, harmonica, keyboards and saxophone for various Irish showbands, covering the popular hits of the time. Known to his fans as "Van the Man", Morrison rose to fame in the mid-1960s as the lead singer of the Northern Irish R&B band Them, with whom he wrote and recorded "Gloria", which developed into a garage band called Bracket. His solo career began under the pop hit-oriented tutelage of Bert Berns with the release of the hit single "Brown Eyed Girl" in 1967. After Berns' death, Warner Bros. Records bought Morrison's contract and allowed him three sessions to record "Astral Weeks" (1968). Although the album initially sold poorly, it is now considered a classic. Moondance (1970) made Morrison a major artist, and he built his reputation with a series of acclaimed albums and live performances throughout the 1970s. Much of Morrison's music is based on the conventions of soul music and early rhythm and blues. An equal part of his catalog consists of long, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as the album Astral Weeks. The two styles together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic soul" and his music has been described as "a kind of violent transcendence". Morrison's albums have achieved good success in Ireland and the United Kingdom, with more than 40 reaching the UK top 40. Following the success of 2021's Latest Record Project, Volume 1, he has reached the top ten albums in the UK for four consecutive decades. Eighteen of his albums have made it into the top 40 in the US, twelve of them between 1997 and 2017. Since his 70th birthday in 2015, he has released an average of more than one album per year. He has received two Grammy Awards, the 1994 Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, the 2017 Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting, and has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2016 he was knighted for his services to the music industry and tourism in Northern Ireland. ★★★ – Veedon Fleece "Veedon Fleece" is the eighth studio album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, released in 1974. The album was named after an ancient Greek myth about Jason and the Argonauts. Morrison was going through a personal crisis at the time, and this record reflects that time of uncertainty and reflection. The album contains eight songs and has a more introspective and spiritual atmosphere. It is often considered one of Morrison's least commercial but most artistic works. The music on "Veedon Fleece" is diverse, ranging from folk and jazz to Celtic influences. The lyrics are deep and poetic, and Morrison deals with personal experiences and philosophical themes. Some notable songs on the album include "Fair Play", "Linden Arden Stole the Highlights" and "Streets of Arklow". The album received mixed reviews upon its release, but over the years it has gained respect and is considered by many to be one of Van Morrison's artistic masterpieces. "Veedon Fleece" showcases Van Morrison's ability to combine a wide range of musical styles while maintaining deep emotional and spiritual resonance Tracklist: A1 Fair Play A2 Linden Arden Stole The Highlights A3 Who Was That Masked Man A4 Streets Of Arklow A5 You Don't Pull No Punches, But You Don't Push The River B1 Bulbs B2 Cul De Sac B3 Comfort You B4 Come Here My Love B5 Country Fair – Warner-Pioneer Corporation Made By Warner- Pioneer Corporation, Japan LP / Near Mint (only fine, flat, thread scratches from the years without effect) Cover / VG+ (spots , see pict.)
