Very rare English edition of Pagés famous work De Pagés, monsieur [Pierre Marie François] Travels round the World, in the Years 1767, 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771 London: J. Murray, 1792/1793 Complete in three Volumes: Volumes I and II date 1793, Volume III dates 1792 and is a first edition.  8vo (23.5x15.5 cm); xvi, 1-294, xvii-xx, 295-320 & xii, 268 & xxii, 303 pp. With fold-out Meteorological Table in Volume III. Uniform simple rebinding in half leather over marbled boards, black original labels with gilt titles on spine. Condition good: Rebound ex-library with only occasional very discrete embossed marks. Internally rough cut but tightly bound with clear and clean pages with sparse light foxing and handling marks. Last page of volume I has been repaired. Due to a printer's error, the table of contents for part 1 ends with page xvi and continues after page 294. While stationed in Santo Domingo in 1766, Pagés, an officer in the French Navy, was granted leave to travel around the world. He sailed to New Orleans, traveled by the Mississippi and Red rivers to Natchitoches, then across Texas and into Mexico, sailed to Guam and the Philippines, and proceeded to Java, India, Persia, Mesopotamia, Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine, before he returned to France, and then wrote an account of his adventure. The English translation of his book is perhaps the oldest description of Texas in English language. Pagés later accompanied an expedition toward the South Pole and one toward the North Pole. Volumes I and II cover Pages voyage round the world, Volume III covers his voyage towards the poles.
