Without a doubt, the major work on Paris of the Second Empire, the magnificent engravings are based on the drawings of Blanchard (Phar.), Cham, Champin, Forest (Eug.), Français, Gavarni, Gérard-Séguin, J.J. Grandville, Lami (Eug.), Pauquet, Renard, Roussel, Valentin, Vernet (Hor.), etc., etc.
The iconography is complemented by numerous typographic ornaments.
The work offers the amateur excellent documentation on Paris and the daily life of Parisians in 1852. The year in which a new constitution for France was passed. Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte is prince-president, on December 2, he takes the name Napoleon III.
