Ali Shir Navai was born in 1441 in Herat (in what is now northwestern Afghanistan). During Ali Şir Nevai's lifetime, Herat was under the rule of the Timurid State and Herat was one of the most important cultural and intellectual centers of this state. Ali Şir Nevai's family was from the Çağatay dynasty, and Ali Şir Nevai held the title of "emir" (mir as Persian) as a high-ranking class in the Timurid State.
The importance of Ali Şir Nevâî in gaining the identity of Chagatai (Chagatay Turkish) as a classical written language in the fifteenth century is known. Before Nevâî and in the age of Nevâî, there are few artists who wrote in Turkish in the Timurid state.
