"Dieser Gutschein ist nur innerhalb des Lagers gültig". This text is on 'money' that was used in German labor, transit and extermination camps in the Second World War. Only valid within the camp.
The camp fee was worthless. Upon entering the camp, Jews had to hand over their own money. They received camp money in return. The exchange office offered the Germans an easy way to appropriate the prisoners' money. Camp Westerbork in Drenthe was used by the Germans as a transit camp. Jews from all over the country were transported here. Trains packed with prisoners left for the extermination camps in Poland and Germany every week.
In order not to be too conspicuous with these scandalous practices, daily life in Westerbork had to be orderly. Living conditions in the barracks were poor, but distractions were provided: prisoners could take courses and participate in sports. There was also a shop in the camp - the Lagerwarenhaus - where small items were sold. Payment was made with the special camp fee.
Towards the end of 1944 the camp fees became invalid. On April 12, 1945, the Canadian army liberated Westerbork camp. There were still several hundred Jewish prisoners present at the time.
