Maurizio Buquicchio

Unique extraordinary artwork, mixed media on masonite by Attilio Alfieri, from 1951. Dimensions: 50 x 70, authenticated.

 The artist was born in Loreto, in the province of Ancona, on 16 February 1904, son of illiterate parents and in very modest financial circumstances. The innovative character and experimental brilliance of his artworks attract the interest of the most influential critics of that period: Raffaello Giolli, Carlo Carrà, but especially Edoardo Persico, who in 1933 (“Corriere Padano”, Ferrara 3 March 1933) considered him “one of the most important avant-garde painters”.

In 1933 he frescoed some walls at the Triennale di Milano with Sironi and Cagli. With the support of Persico he exhibited (out of catalogue) the five “Omaggi”, in which there is an eclectic experimentalism floating between Bauhaus and Lombard Abstract art, with anticipations of informal sign and gesture.

In 1934 there was his first solo exhibition at the Circolo Filologico of Milan.

Thanks to his experience as a decorator and stimulated by young emerging architects, he undertook the execution of “advertising” works in several trade fairs in Italy and abroad. An incredible adventure began, “the use of different materials”, partially inherited from Enrico Prampolini but carried on with his own personality and the bold and bizarre use of images and photos.

Between 1935 and 1939 he decreased his pictorial activity with the easel to focus on work in fairs and to get the diploma at the Brera high school, necessary to obtain the chair of Fresco and Decoration at the Scuola Umanitaria of Milan in 1939.

In 1935 he was present for the first time at the Rome Quadriennale, where he went again in 1939, in 1943 and in 1956, the year in which he obtained the purchase award.

In 1937 he exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, and he got a diploma with a gold medal.

In 1938 he took part in the Venice Biennale (he went back there in 1940 with two artworks, and again in 1942), and he exhibited at the Intersindacale of Naples.

In 1939 he obtained the Premio Sindacato Belle Arti di Roma and the 4th place at the Bergamo landscape exhibition.

In 1940 he obtained the award of the province at the exhibition of the fascist Lombard trade union of the Permanente of Milan, the young award at Premio Bergamo and the gold medal at the exhibition “Italian Artists” in Lausanne.

In the 1940s, struck by the horror and misery of the war, he painted a series of artworks that he called “destructions”. He also made a group of paintings in which the pictorial material is emphasised with soft brush strokes in brown, black, ochre and dark red tones, and in which he created an effective contrast of reliefs and light and shade effects, giving a remarkable three-dimensionality to the compositions, and giving the shapes a considerable dynamism, as in “Ferro da stiro”, “Carciofo secco”, “Rapanelli”, “Composizione con ferro da stiro”, “Barattoli” and the series entitled “Cocci”. In the latter however, as Elena Pontiggia noted [1], he “pays attention not to the material, but to the rhythm of the surface, which breaks into fragments”. [2]

In 1941 he won the “Lago d’Iseo” award at Premio Bergamo, the purchase award of the province of Milan in Milan, and the Premio Ente Turismo in Brescia.

In 1942 he organised two solo exhibitions, at the Galleria Grande of Milan and the Galleria Genova in Genoa. He won the first prize Verona (equal first), the first prize (equal first) “Pier della Francesca” in Florence, and the first prize of the National Ministry of Education in Rome.

He had a liaison with Argentina Sebastiani, a woman coming from his own town, whom he married after the war.

In 1943 he organised a solo exhibition at the Galleria Barbaroux. He exhibited and was invited to the Rome Quadriennale and won the award of the province at the Intersindacale of Milan.

The atelier in Procaccini road, already bombed, was destroyed by the second bombing.

He began his military career in the Resistance, devoting himself to the anti-fascist propaganda, but he was identified by the political police and took refuge in the Marches, where he joined the partisan Brigata G. “Ancona”.

In November his first daughter Sonia was born, but Alfieri could embrace her only when he went back to Milan after the war.

In 1949 his second son, Aliosca, was born.

In the 1950s he abandoned the experimentalism and focused himself on a few, repeated topics (portraits, landscapes, still lifes) and on a rich production of abstract drawings and watercolours. [3]

In 1956 he obtained two large rooms in the city centre, in Pantano road, by the municipality of Milan. It became his permanent atelier.  

In 1957 G. Kaisserlian edited his first monograph “Alfieri artista contemporaneo”, published by Bertieri, Milan.

His name began to be renown and appreciated also abroad. He participated in several collective exhibitions from London to Zurich, Geneva, Paris, Amsterdam and New York, where he set up two solo exhibitions at the Greer Gallery in 1962 and 1963.

The 1960s and 1970s were the periods of major exhibition activity and consequent fame.

His still lifes were much appreciated by the market, but the need to produce a high quantity of them threatened his creativity.

Since the atelier in Pantano road was already too crowded, he rented a large attic, which he kept secret. There he began to work again with the techniques he used in the 1930s, with collages, photographs, and materials and objects found in the streets.

For over ten years, stimulated by a succession of extraordinary events (the tragic deaths of the Kennedys, "Che" Guevara and M. L. King, the protests of 1968 and the years of terrorism in Italy), he made a new series of artworks, even large-sized, and some lithographic folders.

The solo exhibitions in Italy are many. The most important ones are: the anthological exhibition of the Municipality of Milan at the Arengario, and the exhibition of the Società Promotrice Belle Arti at the Valentino of Turin in 1971; the exhibition of the Municipality of Rome at Palazzo Braschi in 1974; the anthological exhibition of the Municipality of Ferrara at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in 1979; the Anthological exhibition of the Municipality of Milan at Palazzo Reale in 1981; the Anthological exhibition of the Municipality of Loreto in 1989.

Among the several certificates of the last thirty years of his artistic career we remember the “Diploma medaglia d’oro alla riconoscenza”, awarded to him in 1988 by the province of Milan.

He died in Milan on 22 April 1992.
