Bilanga one of only 11 witnessed falls of a diogenite meteorite ! Pieces are reported to have fallen in the villages of Bilanga-Yanga and Gomponsago the October 27th, 1999 at 10:30 local time. The local villagers heard several loud explosions but saw nothing as the sky was obscured by clouds that day. A few moments later they saw many stones falling over a large area of scrub brush land that surrounds the small local villages. Bilanga is member of the HED achondrite (or vestan achondrites), is a breccia structurally, and classified as quite unusual magnesium-rich and calcium-poor diogenite, with oxygen isotopes slightly depleted in O17 in regard of other diogenites.
