Great Britain – 1802 Peace of Amiens Medal – 48 mm – Very Rare White Metal Issue
Description:
Extremely rare white metal version of the celebrated British medal commemorating the Peace of Amiens, signed and ratified in 1802 between Great Britain and France. This variant, struck in 48 mm, is far scarcer than the bronze or silvered bronze types and is highly sought after by collectors of early 19th-century British medals.
Obverse:
Legend: REGNO PACEM OBTULIT (“He has offered peace to the kingdom”).
Depicts a Roman-armoured figure (symbolizing King George III or Britannia) receiving a wreath of peace from a winged Victory.
In the exergue: SUPER PACE RATA DIE 27 MARTII (Peace ratified, March 27).
A magnificent neoclassical composition symbolizing the restoration of peace after long wars against France.
Reverse:
Legend: DEO GLORIAM REFERT (“He gives glory to God”).
View of St Paul’s Cathedral, London — the site of the national thanksgiving service celebrating peace.
In the exergue: PAX CELEBRATA DIE I JUNII MDCCCII (Peace celebrated, June 1, 1802).
Fine architectural detail typical of Soho Mint artistry.
Metal: White metal (tin-lead alloy)
Diameter: 48 mm
Date: 1802
Mint: Soho Mint, Birmingham
Engraver: Conrad Heinrich Küchler
References: Eimer 936; BHM 524; MI II p. 575 n. 851
Condition: Exceptionally well preserved for this fragile metal; attractive pale toning and crisp details; minor surface marks consistent with age.
Historical context:
Issued to commemorate the Peace of Amiens (1802), the brief truce that ended hostilities between Britain and Napoleonic France. The peace was celebrated across the kingdom with national thanksgiving ceremonies and medals of various designs. The present white metal 48 mm version is particularly rare — only a few examples are known in private collections and major auctions (noted in 2005 catalogues as a very rare issue).
A highly desirable and historically important medal — an exquisite example of early 19th-century British neoclassical engraving and Soho Mint craftsmanship.
