Set of two silver Art Nouveau boxes – Huguenin Frères (Fritz-Aimé Huguenin-Dezot), Le Locle, Switzerland – ca. 1890-1910 – 900 silver Two refined silver boxes in ornate Art Nouveau style, crafted by the Swiss house Huguenin Frères, founded by Fritz-Aimé Huguenin-Dezot (1845-1915) in Le Locle. Both boxes are richly hand-engraved with floral motifs and have a gilded interior. These elegant miniature boxes were originally intended as chatelaine, powder or pill boxes, and bear witness to the high quality for which Huguenin Frères was renowned – fine engraving, graceful lines and technically perfect finishing. Both bear Swiss hallmarks: Bear stamp (Bernese bear) – official Swiss silver hallmark used between 1882 and 1934, for silver of at least 875/1000. Alignment stamp "900" – designation for 900/1000 silver fineness. Maker's stamp "H F" – attributable to Huguenin Frères, Le Locle. Fritz-Aimé Huguenin-Dezot (born 1845, died 1915) was a Swiss engraver and designer, active in Le Locle, Switzerland. In 1868, he and his brother Zélim-Albert Huguenin (1849-1928) founded the Huguenin Frères company, which specialized in the decoration of silver and other metal watch cases, jewelry, medals, and boxes. The firm developed a strong reputation for high-quality engravings, floral Art Nouveau motifs, and often used silver of 800 or 900 fineness (or at least high fineness) in combination with niello technique or gilded interior. The interior of both boxes is beautifully gilded (vermeil). There's also a small mirror inside. The hinges function perfectly, and the lids close securely.
