From the end of the Eastern Han to the brief unification of the Central Plains under the Jin royal family, political turmoil led to a decline in both the supply and quality of currency. Additionally, the Jin royal family’s laissez-faire approach allowed local magnates to mint coins privately. The most famous example is the five-zhu coin privately struck by Shen Chong, a powerful local figure in Wuxing (present-day Huzhou, Zhejiang). Shen Chong was a scoundrel in his hometown but was well-versed in military strategy and gained the support of General Wang Dun, becoming a wealthy local figure. Later, he rebelled, failed, and was killed. After Shen Chong’s death, many of his five-zhu coins were melted down for bronze ware, making Shen Lang coins relatively rare today and a vivid subject for later poets.
