This is a Japanese chawan (tea bowl) made of high-fired stoneware, created for the preparation and appreciation of matcha. The bowl has a slightly flared rim and a grounded, well-balanced form, suitable for being held with both hands, in accordance with traditional tea ceremony practice.
The glaze is predominantly dark, with deep black and iron-brown tones, enriched by natural kiln effects and subtle reddish highlights. Vertical glaze movement and uneven textures on the exterior create a powerful, expressive surface, while the interior shows smoother pooling of glaze, offering a quiet contrast ideal for viewing the color of whisked tea.
The foot is carefully trimmed, revealing the clay body and clear traces of wheel work, consistent with Japanese studio ceramics. The overall aesthetic reflects wabi-sabi values—controlled irregularity, depth of material, and a strong sense of tactility.
The chawan is accompanied by its original signed wooden box (tomobako). The box bears handwritten ink inscriptions and red seals, indicating the name of the work and attribution. The presence of both calligraphy and seals suggests the box was prepared by or under the supervision of the artist, adding to the cultural and collectible value of the piece.
Based on the style, glaze, and presentation, this chawan can be attributed to the Showa period (mid-20th century). It is suitable both for practical use in tea ceremony and for collection as an example of Japanese ceramic art.
