Signed Honda Isao (1941-)
Born on June 2, 1941 (Showa 16) in Hokkaido, as the youngest child of seven (five sons and two daughters), the fifth son of Yuzo Honda, an employee of the Japanese National Railways.
His mother was the younger sister of Sue, wife of Zenji Takase of Yasumiya, Lake Towada.
After graduating from junior high school in Hakodate, he worked at a furniture shop in Sapporo in 1957. Due to difficulties with senior craftsmen, he moved in March 1958 at the age of 16 to Yasumiya, Lake Towada, at the invitation of his aunt Sue, who managed the Takase store. There, he assisted in the family business of Zenji Takase and learned woodturning techniques.
He formally apprenticed under Zenji Takase at the age of 16 and later became independent after Takase’s death. He has one son, Eiji, with his wife Keiko.
Through an introduction by Kichiya Nara of Oyu, Akita, he inherited the Kata style of Gohei Komatsu (as noted in the Traditional Kokeshi Handbook).
He produced kokeshi in Hirosaki, later relocating to Utsunomiya, and around 2012 participated in the “Koshiro Renaissance” event in Nikko, Tochigi. His works have since been sold through arrangements by the Tsugaru Kokeshi Museum.
His son Eiji continues woodturning and kokeshi making in Hirosaki, and Eiji’s wife Yoko has also become involved in kokeshi production.
