Alexandre Petrus (1988) - PERSEE ET MEDUSE

Title : PERSEUS AND MEDUSA Artist : Alexandre Petrus Technique : Stencil, acrylic spray paint Support : Cotton canvas dimension : 61x46x2 cm year of creation : 2025 signature : Signed on the front with AP monogram authenticity : Comes with certificate of authenticity condition : Excellent --- ABOUT THE ARTWORK This artwork depicts the mythological moment following the beheading of Medusa by Perseus, one of the most powerful and symbolic episodes of Greek mythology. Rather than focusing on violence, I chose to represent the aftermath — a suspended instant between triumph, horror, and transformation. In Greek myth, Medusa was once a beautiful mortal woman, cursed by Athena and transformed into a Gorgon, her gaze turning men to stone. Perseus, son of Zeus and Danaë, is sent to kill her — a task considered impossible. He succeeds not through brute force, but through intelligence and divine assistance: Athena’s mirrored shield, Hermes’ winged sandals, and a curved blade forged by Hephaestus. In this composition, Perseus raises Medusa’s severed head, still alive in its power, its serpentine hair frozen in motion. The head is not depicted as a trophy, but as a force — dangerous, unresolved, and heavy with consequence. The blue monochrome palette reinforces a sense of coldness, fate, and inevitability, distancing the scene from gore and anchoring it in symbolism. The contrast between Perseus’ muscular, idealized body and the distorted, fragmented form of Medusa reflects the duality at the heart of the myth: heroism versus monstrosity, justice versus punishment, masculinity versus feminine power. Historically, Medusa has often been reinterpreted as a victim rather than a villain — a reading that adds depth and moral ambiguity to this scene. Through the stencil technique, sharp cuts define Perseus’ anatomy with clarity and control, while Medusa’s head dissolves into fractured lines and textures, emphasizing chaos and lingering menace. This balance mirrors the myth itself: order imposed over disorder, at a cost. This artwork speaks to collectors drawn to classical mythology reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, where ancient narratives still resonate with modern themes of power, punishment, and transformation. --- ABOUT THE ARTIST I’m Alexandre Petrus, a French stencil artist blending instinct and precision. ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This artwork depicts the mythological moment following the beheading of Medusa by Perseus, one of the most powerful and symbolic episodes of Greek mythology.
