Medal Design: Giuseppe Cassioli (1865–1942)
Giuseppe Cassioli (1865–1942) was an Italian sculptor and medallist known for his refined classical style.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and became highly regarded for his medal and relief work.
Cassioli is especially famous for designing the obverse of the Olympic medals used from 1928 to 1968.
His works often feature mythological, allegorical, and athletic themes inspired by ancient art.
He remains an important figure in the history of Italian sculpture and medallic art.
The obverse depicts Nike, the goddess of victory, holding olive leaves and a laurel wreath, which was given to winners in the ancient Olympic Games.
The reverse depicts a scene in which a laurel wreath is presented to a winner, with the words "XVIII OLYMPIAD" (18th Olympic Games) engraved above.
