He was a pupil of Yōshū Chikanobu (楊洲 周延). His original family name was Watanabe, later changed to Shimada, and his given name was Jirō. He worked under the art name Yōsai and lived in Morigawa-chō, Hongō, Tokyo. His active career spanned roughly from around 1887 (Meiji 20) to 1907 (Meiji 40). He gained recognition primarily for his war-themed nishiki-e prints, depicting events such as the First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War. In addition to war prints, he also produced bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), genre scenes, works related to expositions, the Meiji Constitution and the Imperial Diet, and series such as “Famous Places of Tokyo.” Notable works include “Grand Army and Navy Maneuvers,” “Conference of the General Staff Headquarters,” and “Departure of His Majesty the Generalissimo from Shinbashi.” He also created triptych prints such as “Proceedings of the Imperial Diet of Japan” and “View of Ueno Park, a Famous Place of Tokyo.” During the 1890s, he produced lithographs, and in his later years he turned to hand-painted works.
