While traditionally made from bamboo, modern versions are also available in ABS and hardwoods. Historically, it was utilized by the monks of the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhism in the practice of suizen. Playing it is possible, but proficiency requires proper training and practice. I can't play it, so I haven't tested it.
