Supervised by Kitamura Seibo 北村西望.
It is inscribed with "Meiji Centenary Commemoration 1967" and "Supervised by Kitamura Seibo, carefully made by Koganmaru Ikuhisa."
Emperor Meiji is the 122nd Emperor of Japan.
He controlled the sovereignty of the country from the former Edo Castle, enacted the Imperial Rescript to Soldiers and Sailors, the Constitution of the Empire of Japan, and the Imperial Rescript on Education, and established the sacred and inviolable authority of the Emperor. He also promoted the development of capitalism, won both the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese Wars, revised treaties, annexed Korea, and established a powerful Meiji state.
He was revered as a leader of modern Japan, a symbol of the overthrow of the shogunate and the Meiji Restoration. After the Restoration, he was praised as the "Great Emperor" as a wise emperor who expanded the country's power. He was the first emperor to have the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
Koganmaru Ikuhisa is a sculptor from Takefu-mizumura, Iki-gun, Nagasaki Prefecture. He is a professor at the Pacific Art School and a lecturer at the Department of Architecture at the University of Tokyo.
Seibo Kitamura (December 16, 1884 - March 4, 1987) was a Japanese sculptor from Nagasaki Prefecture. His real name was Nishimo Kitamura.
In addition to his most famous work, the "Nagasaki Peace Statue" in Nagasaki Peace Park, he also created other notable sculptures such as the "Itagaki Taisuke" statue in the National Diet Building. He was awarded the Order of Culture. Seibo Kitamura passed away in 1987 at the age of 104.
He was a recipient of the Order of Culture and the Order of the Sacred Treasure, as well as being designated as a Person of Cultural Merit. In recognition of Seibo's achievements, the Japan Sculptors Association established an award named the "Seibo Kitamura Award" (Seibo Award) for the best work at the association's exhibitions.
