His childhood name was Zensaburo Toyonobu, and in his youth he was surnamed Unpou and Seihaku. From an early age he loved to paint and studied under Yamamoto Tanen in Kyoto. In his twenties he travelled around the country and painted many works at Mori family in Hagi, and in 1852 he became an official painter under Matsudaira Naoaki, the ninth lord of the Hirose domain. with signature 'Yusei' 有聲 This charming hanging scroll depicts a vivid scene of a red parakeet and two blue birds perched among blooming azalea branches, painted by Horie Yusei (1802–1873), a noted painter active from the late Edo to early Meiji period and associated with the Maruyama–Shijō school tradition.
