一组日本草鞋(Waraji)——民俗物品 - 稻草 - 日本 - Early 20th century

This lot consists of a group of 23 traditional Japanese waraji (straw sandals). Originally, each waraji was made as an individual object. At a later stage, they were thoughtfully assembled and hung together for display and sale purposes, creating a strong visual and symbolic presence. In Japanese folk culture, waraji are closely associated with travel, protection, and the symbolic power of “feet” to ward off misfortune. When displayed or hung, they often function as decorative or protective folk objects rather than practical footwear. Each piece is made of rice straw with rope bindings. While based on the form of traditional sandals, the sculptural quality and the current hanging presentation emphasize their folk-art and ethnographic character. The length of each waraji, excluding the hanging loop, is approximately 22 cm. The depth (thickness) of a single piece is approximately 1.5 cm; when two are paired together, the combined depth is approximately 3 cm. Please note that the total group consists of 23 pieces, and one waraji is unpaired, consisting of a single piece only. The waraji themselves date to the early 20th century (Taisho to early Showa period), Japan. The wooden rod used for hanging and display is not included. The hanging strings can be freely adjusted or replaced by the buyer, allowing for flexible reconfiguration and personal presentation. Condition is good overall, with natural wear, fraying, and patina consistent with age and traditional organic materials.
