These two bijin-ga (美人絵) ukiyo-e prints are collectively titled Yuki no Ashita (雪のあした,A Morning After Snow). They form an ōban nishiki-e (大判錦絵,large-format polychrome woodblock print) diptych (二枚続), together depicting the complete "morning after snow" scene as part of Torii Kiyonaga’s Bijin Fūzoku-ga (美人风俗画,Beauty Genre Paintings) series:
1. Outdoor Plum-Blossom Viewing PanelIt portrays two Edo-period beauties enjoying plum blossoms in the snow: the woman on the right, dressed in a dark blue kimono with cherry blossom patterns (paired with a red-patterned obi (帯)), gently adjusts a plum branch with a long pole; the woman on the left, in a brown-yellow striped kimono, reaches out to touch a plum branch with a graceful, serene posture. The snow-covered background and plum branches evoke a refined winter atmosphere, vividly capturing the leisure life of Edo’s civilian women. Characterized by the "slender beauty" aesthetic (stretched posture, elegant features), the nishiki-e (錦絵) multi-color registration technique renders the kimono patterns with delicate layers, calm colors and rich details, embodying the poetic ease of urban life.
2. Indoor Snow-Viewing PanelIt showcases the daily scene of three Edo-period beauties enjoying the snow indoors: the woman standing by the eave, draped in a red-patterned outer coat, gazes sideways at the snowy scenery outside; the other two sit on tatami (畳), one resting lazily and the other holding a warming object, exuding relaxed ease. The bamboo screen, snowscape and home furnishings in the background recreate the cozy winter atmosphere of Edo women’s daily life, continuing the gentle "slender beauty" style and the delicate texture of the nishiki-e technique.
These two woodblock print editions were reprinted and released in the 1960s by Japan’s Adamant Hanga-sha (アダマン版画社). Due to age, the paper shows signs of oxidation, yellowing and minor creases, yet the overall condition remains good.
