The piece is shaped in the traditional taikai form, recognisable by its flatter profile and wide mouth. The rich tenmoku glaze flows naturally in dark brown and black tones, with subtle oil-spot effects and variations that highlight the handmade character. The glossy body contrasts elegantly with the waterfall-like streaks of glaze cascading down the surface, creating a striking visual harmony. The tea caddy comes with a fine silk shifuku (protective pouch), and the underside bears the artist’s signature. The wooden storage box is also signed, with handwritten title and seal. Oketani Teiichi (1935–), born in Kyoto, studied ceramics at Kyoto Fushimi Technical High School before training under his father, the first Teiichi. He later succeeded as the second-generation artist. A distinguished ceramicist, he exhibited at the Nitten and was a member of the Japan Kōgei Association and the Kyoto Art and Craft Association. His accolades include the Kyoto Craft Exhibition Silver Prize, the Kyoto Applied Art Exhibition Excellence Award, ten awards at the Japan Traditional Kinki Region Exhibition, and three acceptances into the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition.
