17th-century Flemish tapestry fragment depicting Mercury Wool, ca. 1650–1700 A decorative fragment of a 17th-century Flemish verdure tapestry, depicting Mercury with his winged helmet and caduceus, set against a richly woven woodland landscape with architectural details. Worked in wool, showing the characteristic blue-green foliage and red and golden highlights of the period. The piece was most likely produced in one of the major tapestry centres of Oudenaarde or Brussels. Age-related wear and historic repairs; later backing for stability. H. 83 cm | W. 108 cm. In fair condition: various (old) restorations and traces of wear. Lining on the reverse to which the tapestry is attached, and the borders of later date.
