Byôbu 屏风(折叠屏风) - 金叶,漆木,纸 - 日本 - Meiji period (1868-1912)
An exquisite tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) showcasing a lively nature scene painted on a shimmering gold-leaf ground.
The composition is animated with sparrows 雀 (suzume) flitting among tall, slender bamboo 竹 (take) stems that rise behind a simple lattice wooden fence. A deep navy-blue river meanders below, bordered by a rocky outcrop covered with moss and a single wild soft pink rose バラ (bara) growing from its base. The scene is enveloped by thick gold-leaf clouds and a luminous gold background.
Executed in colour and ink on gold leaf and mulberry paper, framed by two brocade silk black borders (a thin and broad one), and set within a black lacquered wooden frame.
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912)
Dimensions: Total width 376 cm (2 x 64 cm, 4 x 62 cm); Height 170 cm
In very good restored condition, with minor signs of age on both sides. A small restoration is visible on the fourth panel from the left, and some hinges on the reverse have been strengthened. The protective frame was expertly refurbished in Japan at a later date. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
This folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and displaying as a singular, striking work of art.
