An attractive medium-size byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) fully finished with shiny gold-leaf paper displaying a faint square pattern and a rich aged patina, in a rare configuration of eight panels. In Japan such tranquil and even screens are often used as a background for example vases with ikebana arrangements or other decorative or ceremonial objects. Framed with two brocade silk borders: a thin brown-golden inner band and a broad blue outer band, and encased in a red lacquered wooden frame. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912). Dimensions: Total width: 295.6 cm (2 x 50.4 cm and 4 x 48.7 cm); Height 121.4 cm. In very good restored condition considering its age, with traces of wear on both sides, including some mounting losses and repapering on the reverse.
