Artist Profile Tamaoki Yasuo 玉置保夫 (b. 1941) is a distinguished Japanese ceramic artist born in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, into a family of potters spanning generations. After graduating from Gifu Prefectural Tajimi Technical High School, he trained at the Gifu Prefectural Ceramic Research Institute under the tutelage of 5th generation Kato Kobei and Kato Kozo. Tamaoki made his debut at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1965 and became a full member of the Japan Kogei Association in 1968. Throughout his distinguished career, he has received numerous accolades including the Grand Prize at the Tokai Traditional Crafts Exhibition, the Japan Ceramic Society Award, and the Kato Kobei Prize. In 2008, he was designated as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture for his mastery in Oribe ware.
