日本瓷器茶具套装配达摩 - 瓷 - 日本 - Meiji period (1868-1912)

Japanese Porcelain Tea Set with Daruma (Bodhidharma) Motifs – Underglaze Blue – Late Meiji Period (c. 1905–1915) This lot presents a refined Japanese porcelain tea set dating to the late Meiji period, comprising two cups and one pouring bowl (katakuchi type). The pieces are formed from thin, high-fired porcelain and decorated with hand-painted underglaze blue monk motifs, executed in a free, expressive brush style characteristic of domestic Meiji workshop production. The figures appear to represent a Zen monk, likely inspired by Bodhidharma (Daruma), the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism. Daruma-inspired imagery was widely appreciated within Japanese literati and tea culture during the late Meiji era, symbolising perseverance, discipline and spiritual focus. The simplified, gestural brushwork reflects Zen aesthetics, favouring expressive suggestion over detailed narrative depiction. The cobalt decoration shows gentle diffusion into the glaze, consistent with early 20th-century firing techniques rather than later industrial production. The porcelain body is notably light and thin, with carefully finished foot rims and a warm, naturally aged glaze tone developed over time. The pouring bowl features a functional spout and interior perforations, indicating intended use within a tea or sake context rather than purely decorative manufacture. Each piece bears a hand-painted underglaze workshop mark on the base. While no specific named master has been conclusively identified, the materials, form, decoration and patina are consistent with late Meiji domestic studio porcelain, likely produced in a kiln influenced by Kyoto (Kyō-yaki) traditions. The set originates from a long-established private collection assembled in Japan during the 20th century. ⸻ Specifications • Number of items: 4 (2 cups, 2 pouring bowls) • Origin: Japan • Period: Late Meiji period (circa 1905–1915) • Material: High-fired porcelain • Technique: Hand-thrown, hand-painted underglaze blue • Decoration: Zen monk / Daruma (Bodhidharma)-inspired motifs • Marks: Hand-painted underglaze workshop marks • Production: Domestic workshop production ⸻ Condition Very good antique condition.
