This elegant Bizen flower vase is a refined work by Hiroyuki Matsui, eldest son of Tomoyuki Matsui, an Important Intangible Cultural Property holder of Okayama Prefecture. The vase showcases the distinctive characteristics of Bizen ware, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, which is fired without glaze to bring out the natural beauty of the clay.

Artist Profile
Hiroyuki Matsui (Matsui Hiroyuki) is a distinguished Bizen ware artist and the eldest son of Tomoyuki Matsui, who was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property holder of Okayama Prefecture. Hiroyuki studied glaze techniques and wheel-throwing skills at the Kyoto Municipal Industrial Research Institute, then trained under his father from 1987 before establishing his own practice in 1988.
As a full member of the Japan Craft Association (Nihon Kogeikai), Matsui has dedicated his career to preserving traditional Bizen techniques while creating forms suited to contemporary lifestyles. He is particularly noted for his exploration of various firing techniques including "Kurodatsuki" (black cord markings), as well as his work with "Aisai" (indigo coloring) and "Neriege" (nerikomi/marbling) techniques.
His pieces reflect a deep understanding of Bizen tradition combined with a refined aesthetic sensibility that makes his work accessible to modern collectors and tea ceremony practitioners alike.
