日本水指——由手工塑造的琥珀般的寂静。 - 陶瓷 - Kyû raku (久楽) - 日本 - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

This is a Japanese mizusashi (water jar) used in the traditional tea ceremony, handcrafted and signed by the ceramic artist Kyuraku (久楽). The vessel embodies the refined sensibility of Japanese aesthetics—especially wabi-sabi, the appreciation of natural simplicity, subtle irregularity, and the quiet beauty that emerges over time. The form shows gentle, organic undulations that reveal its hand-thrown nature. Its surface is finished in a lustrous bekkō-yū (鼈甲釉), or tortoiseshell glaze, characterized by deep amber and warm brown tones. The flowing glaze produces a fire-kissed, naturally shifting pattern, with areas of gloss and matte that respond beautifully to changing light. The lid is topped with a chrysanthemum-shaped knob, adding both functionality and an expressive contrast to the vessel’s rounded body. Together, the nuanced glaze textures and the slightly asymmetrical cylindrical form give the piece an atmospheric presence typical of traditional yet individualistic tea wares. On the underside of the lid, the artist’s name 「久楽」 (Kyuraku) is hand-carved, leaving a direct trace of the maker’s touch rather than an impressed seal. The piece is accompanied by a later-made wooden storage box (tomobako), inscribed with the title 「鼈甲釉水指」 (“Mizusashi with Tortoiseshell Glaze”) and the artist’s name. Although not original to the artist, the box provides protection and documentation, enhancing both the practicality and the presentation of the work. A refined and evocative item, ideal for tea practitioners, collectors of Japanese ceramics, or anyone wishing to introduce a sense of traditional elegance and atmosphere into their living or display space. About Mizusashi (水指) A mizusashi is a lidded water container used in the Japanese tea ceremony to hold fresh water for replenishing the iron kettle (kama). It plays both a functional and aesthetic role, often placed on display during the ceremony. Mizusashi can be made from various materials including ceramic, lacquerware, or metal, and are chosen to harmonize with the season and overall tea setting. Their design, texture, and glaze are often appreciated as works of art in themselves. Shipping / Policy Carefully packaged and shipped from Japan by Japan Post or DHL with tracking. If you purchase multiple items, combined shipping is available. Please contact us if needed.
